sensory 101 book

WOW! All I can say is something AMAZING was just released and I can’t wait for you all to see it!

Sensory Processing 101 is an amazing resource for parents, educators, and anyone who wants to know more about any aspect of sensory processing. The book was written by The Inspired Treehouse, who brings a mother and educator perspective to the book, and Lemon Lime Adventures who brings the Occupational Therapist perspective to it all. Each sensory system is explained in a therapy perspective as well as a parent/educator perspective. When reading it the two perspectives bring a comprehensive and easy-to-understand explanation of it all.

The book covers each of the sensory systems, activities to do for each of them, and my favorite part is “Sensory Processing Concerns and Red Flags.” This is where real stories are shared from a parent’s perspective like the following;

I spent the first seven years of my son’s life blaming myself.
I cannot even begin to count the number of times I
called my best friend crying and asking her what I was
doing wrong. If only I could go back in time and tell
myself it wasn’t me. It wasn’t my parenting. It wasn’t my
teaching. It was so much more. Looking back over
the first seven years of his life, I now see
the signs. I see what I wish I had seen
earlier.”

Those words touch my heart as I can relate to that story oh so well. A book like this would have helped me tremendously in those first few years when I was in denial/blaming stage of my son’s needs. This section includes things to look for, a checklist of behaviors that might indicate sensory differences are impeding a child’s ability to function to his/her best ability. It also goes on to explain steps to take to get help and gives resources for parents who might not know where to start.

Sensory Differences are something we all have. If I could tell parents one thing when dealing with behaviors, it would be to look at the child’s sensory needs before anything else. Sensory differences are like the hidden secret to allowing the best in each of our children to shine more often than not. This book is an excellent resource to finding those hidden secrets within your own child. Once they are identified, all the resources needed are included in this book; from activities, to other parents’ stories, and information on what resources might be best.
